What is a Temporary Danger Area (TDA)?

When advanced drone operations take place in UK airspace, particularly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) testing and development, careful consideration must be given to how the activity interacts with other airspace users. One mechanism that may be used is a Temporary Danger Area, commonly abbreviated to TDA. But what is a Temporary Danger Area, why might one be established and how can TDAs support UAS testing and advanced drone operations?

TDA stands for Temporary Danger Area

A Danger Area is a defined volume of airspace within which activities potentially dangerous to aircraft may take place at specified times. A Temporary Danger Area applies this concept on a temporary basis. TDAs can therefore provide a defined airspace structure around particular aviation activities where segregation or additional management is required.

Why Are Temporary Danger Areas Used?

Temporary Danger Areas can be established for unusual aerial activity or operations that require separation from other airspace users. This has made TDAs particularly relevant during the development and testing of some Beyond Visual Line of Sight drone operations. Historically, operators undertaking BVLOS activities without suitable Detect and Avoid capabilities have often required segregated airspace to manage the potential risk of conflict with crewed aircraft. A TDA can provide this defined airspace environment for an approved period and activity.

What Does a TDA Mean for Other Aircraft?

A Temporary Danger Area defines airspace within which the specified activity may present a hazard to other aircraft. The precise arrangements depend upon the individual TDA, its operating procedures and whether it is active. Pilots and other airspace users therefore need to check current aeronautical information when planning a flight and understand the status and requirements of any relevant Danger Areas.

What is a NOTAM?

Temporary Danger Areas and their activation can be communicated to airspace users through NOTAMs. NOTAM stands for Notice to Aviation and provides time-critical information relevant to flight operations. For drone testing programmes, NOTAMs can therefore form an important part of wider flight planning and airspace coordination. Operators should not assume that temporary airspace arrangements will necessarily appear on standard charts and should always use appropriate current aviation information during flight planning.

How Do TDAs Support BVLOS Drone Operations?

Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations allow unmanned aircraft to fly beyond the distance at which a remote pilot can maintain direct unaided visual contact. BVLOS has enormous potential for sectors including maritime operations, logistics, infrastructure inspection, surveillance and emergency response. However, integrating BVLOS drones safely alongside existing airspace users is a complex challenge. Temporary Danger Areas have been one method of providing segregated airspace in which BVLOS systems and procedures can be tested and developed while managing interaction with other aircraft.

Are TDAs the Future of BVLOS?

Temporary Danger Areas have played an important role in enabling BVLOS trials, but work is also taking place to develop airspace structures and procedures that could allow uncrewed and crewed aircraft to operate together more routinely. The long-term objective is increasingly focused on safe integration rather than relying solely on segregation. This makes testing, data gathering and validation particularly important as industry and regulators develop the systems and procedures needed to support routine BVLOS operations.
